Applications of education are all around us. From heavy metal (e.g. Mel Gibson rant) to light gases (e.g. Ned Flanders) here’s your guide to all things profane. Great stuff.

I have a love/hate relationship with “entertaining” in the classroom, but this mini-doc brings together two of my favorite subjects, urban education and documentaries. J Beck seems to have great intentions and its unfortunate that his administrators didn’t want to work with him on his methods. Enthusiasm is tough to find; the rest can be taught. Good luck J-
There’s a charter school in Chicago that celebrates going to college like the NCAA celebrates draft days. Urban Prep is nestled in the Englewood neighborhood, which presents a host of other challenges for the all male student body. The school announced an outstanding 100% college acceptance rate for it’s current senior class and recently celebrated their accomplishment by giving the students an opportunity to announce what schools they would be attending in the fall. The guys donned university caps in draft day fashion, but the kicker is a limited edition Urban Prep shoe by Nike. In a word: Dope. Pics of the shoe below compliments of Kix and the City. *Cue blank stare* Listen up America: everybody can’t teach. It doesn’t matter how good you are with kids or how much you know about a subject. Teaching is as much an art as it is a science, yet it’s the only profession that everybody feels like they can do. Teachers are licensed and certified professionals and that expertise needs to be valued. Too often I see righteous individuals (the irony), churches and even parents attempt to take on a job that they quite frankly aren’t qualified for. Consider transferring this DIY attitude to any other civil service. Would your bring your child to your church hospital? Can I call you up for a good old fashioned citizen’s arrest? How about you defend yourself in a court of law? Stop it. Some things are best left to the pros. Lend your support to schools instead. Otherwise, we get Jimmy running the classroom, and that’s just a bad idea. Trust me on this one. |
