Poor Righteous Radio: 5 Must-Hear Downloads [Free Downloads]

ericlau_warmitup
It was a good week for music. Lots of free stuff was made available this week and some of it is good. I’ve sifted through the fodder and pulled some gems, both from artists that you heard of, and some maybe you hadn’t. Some singles, some mixtapes, some playlists, all pleasant on the ears. These are 5 downloads that you must hear. What you do with it after that is entirely up to you. Read more for the goodies and some good ole’ Teech liner notes.

5. Eric Lau – Warm it up (Cover pictured above). One could say that this title is a play off of the late Dilla’s “Turn it up” motif, but I don’t think that Eric was necessarily going for that. Then again maybe he was. This collection of songs, however does feature a track from the legendary producer. Eric Lau hails from the UK and produced for likes of Guilty Simpson, and if he’s cool with Brother Simpson, he’s cool with Teech. This tape is part grimey-backpacker-rap vibe an part bohemian-soul-singer vibe all rapped up into 21 track playlist. Tracklist:

4. PackFM- Happy Days.

If you are familiar with RIchie Cunningham, then you’ll be familiar with the sample on this track. Its an earworm for sure so proceed at your own risk. Apparently, the track is inspired by the battle emcees hate for rappers. Snarky lyrics and a self directed visual treatment: Teach approves.

3. Guilty Simpson- Before the Verdict.

Stones Throw sent over this gem from Guilty. This track does not appear on Madlib Medicine Show or the OJ Simpson album, both set for release in April. So that means that you can think of it as either a throw away or a teaser, dependent upon if you’re a half empty or half full kind of person. The song is classic Guilty Simpson over a minimalist Madlib beat. As a bonus, the acappella for the track is being released as well for you producers and mixtape DJ’s. Head over to the Stones Throw Forums for a chance to compete. One week only.

2. Rapper Big Pooh- The Purple Tape.
cover
The only slight that I have with this tape is the name. Though unofficial, the “purple tape” is reserved as a reference to a classic album by another slightly portly, grub-loving wordsmith (If you don’t know what I’m referring to, stop reading this post immediately and google “the purple tape”). Other than that, Big Pooh is leaving less for skeptics to hold against him as he continues to flex lyrical prowess outside the shadow of his Little Brother running mate, Phonte. The Purple Tape gets its moniker because of Producer Black Milk’s use of “The Purple One’s” wizardry for samples. You can preview the entire album at Big Pooh’s Bandcamp Page. Audiophiles can also download the mixtape in different formats dependent upon your listening preferences. As a added bonus, Pooh gives us a bit of a behind the scenes look at the making of the collaboration.

1. Mick Boogie- Teddy Pendergrass Sample Set.
picture-22

Teddy P has passed on, but luckily he’ll live forever in his music and his legacy. Mick Boogie took a break from his usual Mixtape Dj schtick to grab just a few songs that brought the legend of Teddy Pendergrass over to Hip Hop. This is a collection of eight songs, 4 of Teddy P’s and 4 of the songs that sampled him. I enjoyed listening for those samples that weren’t obvious and just hearing a handful of good music.

“I put together this little collection of my favorite Teddy Pendergrass songs and the songs that sampled them… including Mobb Deep, Little Brother, Ghostface and Keith Murray. Let’s reminisce and pay respects by enjoying his genius as it lives on through our generation.” -Mick Boogie
